Comedian Jay Leno unearthed an old Corvette repair manual Friday he needed at John K. King Used & Rare Books on Lafayette Boulevard in downtown Detroit. He was in town for a Make-a-Wish Michigan event.
Tom Heitjan, rare book room manager, tells the Detroit Free Press that the celebrity customer — a classic car collector — found the hefty repair guide in that room’s vintage collection and then browsed the third-floor automotive section for more practical treasures.
“Jay’s been coming here for years, since the late 1980s. He always mentions us when he talks about Detroit,” Heitjan says in a Facebook message. “He’s a nice, funny guy. But, when he gets around car books, he’s all business.”
