George Gervin, Chris Webber, Jalen Rose. Detroit has produced some incredible basketball talent over the years. It also has a distinct identity solidified by the Detroit Pistons during the “Bad Boys” era.
Under Armor has recently recognized this culture by creating a 12-minute documentary on basketball in Detroit. “Home Court: The History of Detroit Basketball” features such iconic basketball establishments as St. Cecilia’s and Joe Dumars Fieldhouse, with footage of the Pistons, Fab Five, and other legendary figures that shaped basketball in the city.
The documentary is hosted by the actor Sarunas Jackson of the HBO show “Insecure.”
After looking at the past, the documentary ends by profiling the future of basketball in the city: the women’s team at University Preparatory Academy and its coach Brittany Foote.
There’s also interviews with non-players, like a boxer and an entrepreneur, to find out how growing up playing basketball in Detroit influenced their current professional work. One common thread emerges from all the interviews: the style of play here reflects the grittiness of the city itself.
